# Connect Claude or ChatGPT

> Connect Claude, Claude Code or ChatGPT to Brilo by signing in to your Brilo account, so the AI app can read your agents, calls and call totals without an API key.

Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT can connect to the Brilo MCP server by signing in to your Brilo
account instead of using an API key. You allow the connection on a Brilo page, pick one workspace
and choose what the app can see. The app can then read your agents, calls and call totals. It
cannot change anything in Brilo.

## API key or sign in

* **Sign in** works with Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT. The app gets five read only tools,
reads the one workspace you pick, and never receives transcripts.
* **An API key** works with Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and your own agent. The client gets every
tool on [MCP tools](https://docs.brilo.ai/api-reference/mcp/tools.md), including tools that change your own contact
fields, and reads the workspace the key belongs to. See
  [Connect an MCP client](https://docs.brilo.ai/api-reference/mcp/connect.md).

## Before you start

* A Brilo account in the workspace you want the app to read.
* In Claude on a Team or Enterprise plan, only an admin can add a custom connector.
* In ChatGPT, custom MCP servers are available on Business, Enterprise and Edu on the web. On
Business, only admins and owners can add one. Pro can connect with read permissions.
* The server address: `https://api.brilo.ai/mcp`.

## Steps

**1. Add Brilo to your AI app**

> [tab] Claude
>
> In Claude, open **Customize**, then **Connectors**, add a custom connector with the URL
> `https://api.brilo.ai/mcp`, then connect it.

> [tab] Claude Code
>
> Run this in your terminal, then run `/mcp` in Claude Code and follow the steps in your
> browser to sign in:
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> claude mcp add --transport http brilo https://api.brilo.ai/mcp
> ```
>
> If you already connected Brilo in Claude and Claude Code is logged in with your Claude
> account, Brilo shows up in `/mcp` without this step.

> [tab] ChatGPT
>
> In ChatGPT on the web, go to **Plugins**, select the plus button, then
> **Add custom MCP server**, and enter `https://api.brilo.ai/mcp`.

**2. Sign in to Brilo and allow the connection**

A Brilo page opens in your browser. Sign in if asked, choose the workspace the app may read,
keep on what it can see (**Your agents**, **Your call history**), then select **Allow**.
Brilo sends you back to the app.

**3. Ask a question**

Ask something like "list my Brilo agents" or "how many calls did my agents answer last week".

## You will know it worked when

* The app lists the Brilo tools, such as `list_agents` and `get_call_stats`.
* Asking "list my Brilo agents" returns the agents you see in your dashboard.

## What the app can read

* `list_agents`: your agents, with name, description, status, role, modality, languages,
  timezone and company.
* `get_agent`: one agent, adding its website, greeting and voicemail message.
* `list_calls`: calls, newest first, with when each was placed, its length, direction, status,
who answered and why it ended.
* `get_call`: one call with the same fields.
* `get_call_stats`: call totals by day, outcome and agent, for up to 90 days.

The app never receives what was said on calls, recordings, caller names and numbers, or the
instructions you gave your agents. HIPAA workspaces share agents and call totals only.

## How long a connection lasts

* A connection ends 90 days after you allow it, or after 30 days without use. Sign in again to
  keep going.
* If you are removed from the workspace, the connection stops working at once.
* To stop an app sooner, remove Brilo from that app's connectors or plugins.

## If it did not work

* **The Brilo page says the app can't connect to Brilo.** Brilo only accepts sign ins from
Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT. Add Brilo from one of those apps.
* **The Brilo page says there is no active Brilo workspace on this account.** Ask a workspace
owner to invite you, then try again.
* **The app has no call tools.** Your workspace is a HIPAA workspace, or you turned off
**Your call history** when you allowed the connection. Add Brilo again to change your choice.

For anything else, email [support@brilo.ai](mailto:support@brilo.ai) with the time you tried and
the app you used.

## FAQ

> [accordion] Can Claude or ChatGPT change anything in Brilo?
>
> No. A connection made by signing in can only read agents, calls and call totals. It cannot
> change agents, place calls or send messages.

> [accordion] Which workspace does the app read?
>
> Only the workspace you picked when you allowed the connection. No tool takes a workspace as
> a parameter, so the app cannot reach another workspace.

> [accordion] Why can't the app see call transcripts or recordings?
>
> A connection made by signing in never receives what was said on calls or recordings, in any
> workspace. Open the call in your Brilo dashboard to read or hear it.
