# Create your first agent

> Build your first Brilo agent in about five minutes, either by letting Brilo read your website or by answering a few questions about your business.

Create your first agent in about five minutes. You can either point Brilo at your website and let
it read your pages, or answer a few short questions about your business. Either way you finish with
a working agent that has a voice, a language, and instructions you can change.

## Before you start

* You do not need a phone number yet. You can talk to your agent in your browser first.
* Have your website address ready if you want Brilo to read it for you.
* Creating an agent is free on any plan. You are charged for calls and numbers, not for building.
* You will be working in the dashboard, under **Agents**.

## Steps

    In the dashboard, go to **Agents** and start a new agent.

  <Step title="Choose how to set it up">
    Brilo asks how you would like to set up your agent and offers two routes:

    * **Scan my website** reads your pages and picks up your opening hours, services, and prices.
    * **Tell us about my business** asks you a few short questions instead.

    Choose **Scan my website** if your site is public and reasonably current. Choose
    **Tell us about my business** if your site is thin, out of date, or behind a login.

  <Step title="If you are scanning: your website and how much to read">
    Enter your address, then choose how much of the site to read:

    * **Just this page** reads only the address you gave.
    * **My main pages** reads up to 10 pages, starting from the one you gave. This suits most
      businesses.
    * **My whole site** reads up to 20 pages and takes longest.

  <Step title="If you are answering questions: industry, jobs, and anything else">
    Choose your industry, then pick what you want the agent to do, for example booking appointments
    or taking messages. The last question asks for anything else it should know. It is optional and
    worth answering: your closing times, the names of your team, and anything your agent must never
    promise all belong here.

  <Step title="Wait while Brilo builds it">
    Brilo reads what you gave it, writes your agent's instructions, chooses a voice, and sets up
    call tags. This usually takes a minute or two.

  <Step title="Choose the voice and language, then continue">
    Pick how your agent sounds and which language it speaks, then continue. If you would rather keep
    working on it, close the builder and your progress is kept.

## You will know it worked when

* Your new agent appears in your list of agents.
* Its instructions are filled in with your business details rather than blank.
* You can talk to it in your browser straight away, with no phone number attached.

## If it did not work

**The scan found very little about your business.** Your site is probably behind a login, built
mostly of images, or very short. Switch to answering the questions yourself, then upload your
material with [Add a document or website](/knowledge/add-a-document-or-website).

**Your agent sounds generic.** That is what happens when the questions were answered thinly. The
fix is not to rebuild: it is to [write what your agent says](/agents/write-what-your-agent-says) and
give it your real material.

**You cannot create another agent.** Your plan includes one agent on Free and three on Starter.
Delete one you are not using, or move up a plan. See [Plans](/supported/plans).

  <Accordion title="Do I need a phone number before I can create an agent?">
    No. You can create an agent and talk to it in your browser with no phone number at all. You only
    need a number when you want real callers to reach it. See
    [Buy a phone number](/phone-numbers/buy-a-phone-number).

  <Accordion title="Should I scan my website or answer the questions myself?">
    Scan your website when it is public and current, because Brilo picks up your hours, services,
    and prices without you typing them. Answer the questions when your site is thin, out of date, or
    behind a login. Both routes produce the same kind of agent and you can edit either afterwards.

  <Accordion title="How many pages of my website does Brilo read?">
    One, up to 10, or up to 20, depending on the depth you choose. **My main pages** reads up to 10
    and suits most businesses. If your prices or policies live deeper than that, upload them

  <Accordion title="How long does it take to create an agent?">
    About five minutes, most of it you answering questions or waiting for the scan. The build itself
    usually takes a minute or two. Getting the agent genuinely good takes longer, because that means
    uploading your own material and listening to test calls.

  <Accordion title="Can I change my industry after the agent is created?">
    The industry you choose shapes the instructions Brilo writes at the start, and it is not locked
    in. Everything it produced is editable afterwards in your agent's **Prompt** and **Configure**
    tabs, so changing direction means editing those rather than starting again.

  <Accordion title="Why can I not create another agent?">
    You have reached your plan's agent limit: one on Free and three on Starter. Pro and above are
    unlimited. Agents you no longer use still count, so delete an old one before building a new one.

  <Accordion title="Can I copy an agent I already built?">
    There is no duplicate button in the dashboard, so a second agent is built the same way as the
    first. If you want a consistent starting point, keep your best instructions somewhere you can
    paste from, and build the new agent by answering the questions rather than scanning again.

  <Accordion title="Does creating an agent cost anything?">
    No. Building agents is free, and so is talking to one in your browser. You are charged for phone
    numbers and for calls and messages once real people reach your agent, and taking an agent live
