# Choose a voice

> Pick the voice your Brilo agent uses on calls, hear it before you commit, and change it later without touching anything else about your agent.

The voice is the first thing every caller judges, and it takes about a minute to set. You choose it in
your agent's **Configure** tab, and you can change it whenever you like without affecting your
instructions, your knowledge, or your phone number.

## Before you start

* An agent, even an unfinished one. See [Create your first agent](/agents/create-your-first-agent).
* Your language set first, because it filters which voices you can use. See
  [Set the language](/agents/set-the-language).
* One minute.
* You will be working in your agent's **Configure** tab.

## Steps

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Configure tab">
    Open your agent and go to **Configure**. **Voice** sits under **Agent Information**, below
    **Language**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the voice picker">
    Click the **Voice** field. You get the voices available for your language and your workspace
    region, each with its accent and a short description.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Hear it before you choose">
    Play the sample next to a voice rather than choosing on the name. Names tell you nothing, and the
    difference between two voices that both read as "warm and professional" is obvious the moment you
    hear them.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick it and save">
    Select the voice and save. The next caller hears it, and a call already in progress finishes on
    the old one.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Call your agent and listen">
    A voice sounds different on a phone line than through your laptop speakers. Call it before you
    decide you are done. See [Test your agent yourself](/go-live/test-your-agent-yourself).
  </Step>
</Steps>

## You will know it worked when

You call your own number and the voice that answers is the one you picked, at a pace you would be
happy for a customer to hear.

## How to pick one that works

* **Match the accent to your callers, not to you.** A local accent reads as a local business, and
  callers relax faster with one.
* **Prefer clear over characterful.** A voice with personality is enjoyable for three seconds and
  tiring for three minutes. Your callers are trying to book an appointment.
* **Listen to a whole sentence, not a word.** Pace and breathing only show up over a full sentence.
* **Check numbers and names.** Play a sample and listen to how it handles a phone number or a street
  name, since that is where voices tend to fall apart.

## What else you can do here

* Change the accent without changing the language. English covers American, British, Australian,
  Canadian, Indian, Irish, New Zealand, and South African. See [Available voices](/supported/voices).
* Adjust how fast it speaks, where your account has **Speaking Rate**, or slow a rushed voice down.
  See [Give your agent a personality](/agents/give-your-agent-a-personality).
* Fix a mispronounced business name or product name without changing voice. See
  [Teach it names and terms](/knowledge/teach-it-names-and-terms).
* Run two agents with two different voices, one per phone number, if you cover two brands. See
  [Assign a number to an agent](/phone-numbers/assign-a-number-to-an-agent).

## If it did not work

**The voice list is short or empty.** The list is filtered by your language and your workspace region.
Change **Language** and the list changes with it. If it is still empty, your region has no voices for
that language yet, so contact [support@brilo.ai](mailto:support@brilo.ai).

**The voice you had disappeared.** You changed the language and the old voice does not speak the new
one. Pick a replacement.

**It mispronounces your business name.** That is vocabulary, not voice. No voice will fix it, and
changing voice to chase it wastes an afternoon. See
[Teach it names and terms](/knowledge/teach-it-names-and-terms).

**It talks too fast.** Try a different voice first, since pace varies a lot between them. If your
account has **Speaking Rate** in **Call Settings**, set it to slow.

**It sounds robotic on the phone but fine in the browser.** Phone lines compress audio, so every voice
loses some warmth. Compare two candidates over a real call rather than in the browser.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Can I hear a Brilo voice before I choose it?">
    Yes. Play the sample next to each voice in the picker. Always do this over a real phone call as
    well before you go live, because a phone line changes how a voice sounds.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do I change my agent's voice?">
    Open your agent, go to **Configure**, click **Voice**, pick a new one, and save. Nothing else
    about your agent changes, and the next caller hears the new voice.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why can I only see a few voices?">
    The list is filtered to voices that speak your selected language and are available in your
    workspace region. Change the language and you get a different set.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I use my own recorded voice or clone a voice?">
    Not today. You choose from the voices Brilo offers. If you need a specific brand voice, email
    [support@brilo.ai](mailto:support@brilo.ai) and describe what you are after.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does changing the voice affect my instructions or knowledge?">
    No. Voice is only how your agent sounds. Your instructions, knowledge, actions, and phone number
    are untouched, so switching voice is a safe change to make at any time.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I make my agent speak more slowly?">
    Where your account has **Speaking Rate** in **Call Settings**, set it to slow. Not every voice
    supports speed control, and Brilo tells you when the one you picked does not. Choosing a naturally
    slower voice is often the better fix.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Should I use a male or female voice?">
    It matters far less than clarity and accent. Pick the one that sounds most like a competent person
    at your business and move on, then listen to a few real calls and change it if callers hesitate.
  </Accordion>
